The Integrated Community Health Initiative Organization (ICHIO) is actively contributing to government and partners' efforts to mitigate and respond to AMR in Uganda with the following priorities.
1. Improving Awareness and Understanding of AMR: Public education campaigns and professional training programs to enhance knowledge about AMR and its consequences.
2. Strengthening the Knowledge and Evidence Base: Enhancing surveillance systems to monitor AMR trends and antibiotic use.
3. Reducing the Incidence of Infection: Implementing better infection prevention and control measures in healthcare settings and the community.
4. Optimizing the Use of Antimicrobial Medicines: Promoting rational use of antibiotics through stewardship programs.
5. Research and innovations in AMR: Encouraging research and development of new diagnostics, treatments, and vaccines.
Most recent ICHIO's initiatives include:
Conducting sensitization programs and screening for TB and HIV clients, referring them for appropriate medical checks and treatment in partnership with AIDS Information Centre.
Implementing health education programs in schools to raise awareness about AMR and promote healthy practices among students in partnership with KCCA Central Division.
Building resilient community health systems to identify cases of AMR, support treatment, conduct contact tracing, and report findings. This sustainable approach ensures continuous monitoring and response to AMR at the community level in Kampala city slums.
